Jacqueline Layne Biography

Jacqueline Layne is the wife of the late baseball player Lou Brock, who died on September 6, 2020 at the age of 81. He was a first-ballot electee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Jacqueline Layne Lou Brock – Lou Brock Wife

Jacqueline is the third wife of Lou Brock. The couple got married on April 5, 1996. He was previously married to his first wife Katie Hay from December 1960 getting divorced in 1974. He later married his second wife Virginia Daniels on November 1, 1976 but they divorced on March 17, 1995.

Lou Brock was a baseball player who was a first-ballot electee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. He was the National League’s all-time leader in stolen bases with 938. He had 3,023 hits.

Brock joined the Cardinals at the age of 24 on June 15, 1964 as a outfielder from the Chicago Cubs in a trade that cost them popular righthander Ernie Broglio. At the time the Cardinals thought it was the worst trade as the time Brock had batted only .263, .258 and .251 in his 2½ years with the Cubs.

Brock was counted on as a table setter for the Cardinals and went on to hit .348 the rest of the 1964 season and steal 33 bases as the Cardinals rallied to win the National League pennant on the last day of the regular season and went on to beat the New York Yankees in a seven-game World Series to bring St. Louis its first World Series title since 1946.

Brock hit .300 in that World Series and then, showing he was at his best when the lights were brightest, batted .414 with seven stolen bases in the 1967 World Series, which the Cardinals won in seven games from Boston. He also hit .464 with seven more steals and a record 13 hits in the 1968 World Series loss against Detroit.

Brock hit a career 221 low for the Cardinals in 1978 and was often benched in the second half of the season by manager Ken Boyer, his former teammate. He took it personal and the next spring announced he was “orchestrating his own exodus.”

In 1979, Lou announced that he was retiring after hitting .304 at age 40 and stole 21 bases. One of his 123 hits that year was No. 3,000 for his career. He later became a businessman, a broadcaster, a special base running instructor and a minister.

In 1985, he was inducted in the Hall of Fame, on the first ballot. He was also inducted in the sports halls of fame in Arkansas, Louisiana and Missouri, and his statue is in the Plaza of Champions at Busch Stadium.

Lou died on September 6, 2020 at the age of 81. According to the Associated Press, his death was confirmed by Dick Zitzmann, Brock’s longtime agent and friend but didn’t provide any details about the cause.

Lou’s cause of death has not been revealed yet but he suffered from diabetes which saw his left leg amputated. In 2017 he suffered multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer), before he suffered a stroke, and later a heart ailment.
