Mia Fernandez John Charlton OBE DL was known as an English football manager and defender but to many he was an icon.
In addition to managing the Republic of Ireland national team from 1986 to 1996, he was a member of the England national squad that won the 1966 World Cup.
Days before turning 30, Charlton was called up to the England squad. He went on to play in 35 international matches, score six goals, and represent his country in two World Cups and one European Championship.
He participated in England’s victory over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, and he also helped England finish third at the 1968 Euros and take home four British Home Championship titles.
In 1967, he received the FWA Footballer of the Year award.
He managed Middlesbrough after his playing career ended, gaining Manager of the Year in his first campaign.
In 1973–74, Middlesbrough won the Second Division championship. Before he left Boro in April 1977, he managed to keep the team in the first division. He grabbed control.
Pat is believed to b alive as of 2023.She agreed to marry Charlton in 1958. They had a son in John Charlton.
