Currently in recovery after being kidnapped and tortured by William Lewis, a sadistic serial rapist now on trial for the crime, Benson is preparing herself for court.

Who played William Lewis in Svu?
Last May, “SVU” ended its season with Benson (Mariska Hargitay) discovering William Lewis (Pablo Schreiber) in her apartment after she and her cohorts had failed to lock him away for a series of rapes and murders.
Benson, however, may never be the same — a break with tradition for the “Law & Order” shows, which have generally shied away from multiple-episode story lines. Creator Dick Wolf has prided himself on the use of stand-alone episodes, which make it far easier for stations to repeat them.

Olivia Margaret Benson is a fictional character on the NBC police procedural drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay. Benson holds the rank and pay-grade of Captain and is the Commanding Officer of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department, which operates out of the 16th Precinct.
Benson is a child of her mother’s rape. Her mother’s rapist, Joseph Hollister, later committed suicide. Benson’s mother Serena ( Elizabeth Ashley ), an English professor, was an alcoholic who abused Olivia emotionally and physically.
In the Season 22 episode “Return of the Prodigal Son”, Benson and Stabler see each other again for the first time in 10 years when Stabler’s wife Kathy ( Isabel Gillies) is severely injured in a car bombing apparently meant for Stabler.

Dodds suffers a stroke after surgery and dies. Benson blames herself for Dodds’ death because she did not initially search Munson for a weapon.
At the end of the episode, the original suspect is cleared, and Benson apologizes to him, admitting that she was a victim of sexual assault. In the season 11 episode “Perverted,” Benson becomes the prime suspect in the sexual mutilation and murder of a biker gang member.
In season 18, Tucker tries to convince Benson to retire with him, though at the conclusion of the episode “Next Chapter”, Benson realizes she is not ready to do so, as being a cop is part of who she is.
While there, she held a membership in a sorority. In addition to English, Benson speaks Italian, Russian, some Spanish and French, and is able to read the Miranda warnings in at least two other languages.

We all think of Olivia Benson as a crusader for sexual assault survivors. She believes their stories. She defends them against the doubters. And she helps them get justice by sending their rapists and abusers to prison. We see Detective Benson as a model officer of the law.

In season 5 , episode 9 , Detective Benson realizes that a woman she dismissed several years ago because she was drunk was actually telling the truth about being held captive in a dungeon and raped repeatedly.
In season 11, episode 9 , Detective Benson is framed for murder. Benson and Stabler discover that the person responsible for the set-up is a man named Brady Harrison, a serial rapist who went to prison years ago thanks to Benson and Stabler’s detective work.
In episode 10 of the season, Benson makes mistake after mistake because of her conflict of interest. When an investigation implicates Calvin’s mother in a murder case, Captain Cragen takes Benson off the case because she’s too close to it. But Benson disobeys his orders and goes looking for Calvin’s mother anyway.
