Parents Ramsey Lewis Sr. and Pauline Lewis welcomed Ramsey into the world on May 27, 1935.

As a young man, Lewis played with a number of local bands, including Edward Virgil Abner’s Knights of Music, after starting piano lessons at the age of four.

Later, Lewis created the Ramsey Lewis Trio with drummer Isaac “Red” Holt and bassist Eldee Young after initially joining the jazz trio the clefs.

Ramsey Lewis, a jazz musician with more than 60 years of experience and a three-time Grammy winner, has passed away.

According to a statement issued by his family, he passed away on September 12 in the morning at his residence in Chicago. Age-wise, he was 87.

Lewis not only produced music but also performed live and hosted the United Stations Radio Networks-syndicated radio show Legends of Jazz, which debuted in 1990.

Additionally, he was the anchor of the Ramsey Lewis Morning Show on the WNUA “smooth jazz” station in Chicago (95.5 FM).

Additionally, he was a member of the board of trustees for the Chicago inner-city music program Merit School of Music as well as the 2009-founded public high school for the arts in Chicago, The Chicago High School for the Arts.
