He was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S. Ismail played college football at Notre Dame before transferring to both the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 1991–92 and the National Football League (NFL) from 1993–20011. He recorded two 1,000-yard receiving seasons in the NFL and was a CFL All-Star in 1991, as well as the Most Valuable Player of the 79th Grey Cup.
