Patricia Louise Holte, best known as Patti LaBelle, is May 24, 1944, American R&B singer, songwriter, actor, and businesswoman. Patti LaBelle is known as the “Godmother of Soul”.

LaBelle dropped out of John Bartram High School in Philadelphia about a semester before graduation in 1962. LaBelle returned to school in her mid-thirties and eventually graduated.

LaBelle said that Jackie Wilson sexually attacked her in the 1960s at the Brevoort Theatre in Brooklyn. LaBelle was engaged to Otis Williams, a founding member of The Temptations, in 1964. Patti ended the engagement after a year because she was afraid Williams would compel her to move to Detroit and retire from touring.

LaBelle married a longtime friend, Armstead Edwards, a schoolteacher, on July 23, 1969. Edwards became LaBelle’s manager after she launched her solo career, a position he held until 2000. LaBelle confirmed that she and Edwards had formally separated that year, and their divorce was formalized in 2003.
