Advanced SearchNanabhai Bhatt was an Indian film director and producer who had made more than 100 fantasy and mythological movies. Born and raised in Porbandar, British India, Nanabhai was interested in films since his childhood. His elder brother, Balwant Bhatt, was a sound recordist working for ‘Prakash Pictures,’ and Nanabhai joined him as an assistant. Over time, Nanabhai began writing scripts and stories under the pseudonym “Batuk Bhatt.” In 1942, he ventured into direction, co-directing the film ‘Muqabala.’ Working under the production house ‘Basant Pictures,’ he directed a few more films until he started his own production house, titled ‘Deepak Pictures.’ The first film that he directed under his banner was ‘Maa Baap ki Laaj,’ which was released in 1946. Over the next few decades, he kept producing and directing films that focused on religious themes, such as ‘Lakshmi Narayan,’ ‘Ram Janma,’ and ‘Lav Kush.’ He also directed a few films based on Arabian mythology, such as ‘Baghdad’ and ‘Sinbad Jahazi.’ Toward the end of his directing career, in the early 1980s, he worked on two Gujarati films. With that, he became a pioneer filmmaker in the Hindi film industry, who explored multiple genres.However, he continued to experiment with genres throughout his life. The film was written by Salim Khan and directed by his son Mahesh Bhatt. Although it failed to create a big impact at the box office, it received positive reviews from critics. Following this, Nanabhai took a permanent break from films.Family, Personal Life & DeathNanabhai Bhatt was married to Hemlata Bhatt. However, he had a notorious affair with a Gujarati Muslim woman named Shirin Mohammad Ali in the 1940s. He had nine children from both his wife and mistress, including filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt (with Shirin).Mahesh Bhatt said in an interview that Nanabhai was an absentee father and rarely came to visit them. He however, paid for his illegitimate children’s education and well-being. Nanabhai passed away from heart failure on April 24, 1999. He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
