After gaining popularity on the TikTok, Derek Tran joined the San Francisco, California-based TikTok collective ‘Social Demographic Group’, which represented dozens of influencers primarily from Asian demographics. On October 31, 2019, he made an Instagram post from the official handle of the collective, @officialsdg, in which he introduced himself as a 15-year-old half-Vietnamese and half-White influencer who also plays American football. He further revealed that he had joined the group because some of the popular influencers he looked up to “content wise” were part of the group. He was member of the group along with fellow social media stars such as Kairi Cosentino, Neo Romasanta, Hannah Kim, Neil Shibata, Freddie Liu, Aaron See, Adrian Yumul, Ivan Del Aguila, Niko Katsuyoshi, Joel Barnes, Dawn Morante, Josh Rasberry, Ricky Young, Kevin Tran, Ryan Kim, Iry Recaro, Justin Kim, Simon Kim, Laettner Calderon, and Noel Gajo. Along with other members of the group, he participated in a fundraising initiative in November 2019 in which 80% of the proceeds from official SDG merchandise sales were donated to the UNICEF Foundation. While he was an integral part of the collective for a few months till December 2019, he did not appear in later Instagram posts by the group, which last posted on Instagram on May 29, 2020.
