Bumstead was reared in Ottawa, Ontario, where he was born. In high school, he participated in a variety of sports, including fencing, football, baseball, basketball, and hockey.

After developing what he considered to be a nice physique, Bumstead met Iain Valliere, a professional bodybuilder who was dating Bumstead’s sister and who is now his coach Chris Bumstead is 28 years as of 2023.

He won the Olympia Classic Physique champion after winning the event in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. He finished second in 2017 and 2018.
