The 70-year-old former student of New Trier High School, longstanding director of JPMorgan Chase, and president of Henry Crown & Co. passed away on Sunday in an automobile accident.
The Woody Creek sheriff and coroner’s office reported that James S. “Jim” Crown was killed in a single-car collision at the exclusive Aspen Motorsports Park.
According to Forbes, the Crown family had a net worth of $10.2 billion in 2020, ranking it as the 34th richest family in the world at the time.
Remembered for his philanthropy and civic leadership, Crown was the grandson of Chicago industrialist Henry Crown, who turned a sand and gravel fortune into a major stake in General Dynamics.
Crown served as the lead director of the arms manufacturer, the longest-serving board member at JPMorgan Chase, as well as a trustee at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago Civic Committee, and University of Chicago. He was also the chairman and CEO of the family business Henry Crown & Co.
Crown attended Hampshire College in Massachusetts to study political science before earning a law degree from Stanford University’s law school. Crown was also chosen vice president of the student council at New Trier East High School.
James Crown lost control of his car while navigating a bend at the Aspen Motorsports Park in Woody Creek, colliding with an impact barrier, the report claimed. “The official cause of death is under investigation pending autopsy, although [multiple] blunt force trauma is evident.”
