Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini chose the stage name Doja Cat because of her favorite strain of marijuana and her pet cat. She has the name since her early performing days as a teenager when she was only doing gigs at schools and participating in releasing music on her personal social media and music streaming accounts.

Doja stems from the name for a strain of weed. As a teenager, Amala Dlamini was very fascinated with cannabis culture and has admitted to even getting addicted to a recreational drug. She has however overcome that addiction although some tabloids claim she still occasionally uses it.

Admittedly now that Amala Dlamini has grown a bit older and matures she has expressed a slight dislike for the stage name she chose as a teenager claiming the persona the name gives off and the impression it creates of a pothead hippie girl overshadows her actual personality.
