New information has surfaced in the murder investigation of 17-year-old Jordany Aracena, who was shot and killed in New York City earlier this week.
An NYPD insider told the New York Daily News that Aracena was an aspiring drill rapper whose lyrics might have made him a target. It is unclear if any of the attackers were referenced in the teen’s music, but an anonymous source said detectives believe the attack was retaliatory.
The shooting occurred on Beekman Avenue in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx at approximately 6:15 p.m. local time. Five men in masks can be seen on surveillance footage sitting on a power box, seemingly waiting for Aracena to arrive. A man shoots Aracena in the chest not long after the teen appears. After leaving Aracena for dead, the attackers reportedly ran west toward Oak Terrace.
After being taken to Lincoln Hospital, the teen was reportedly pronounced dead there. The NYPD has not yet made any arrests in relation to the shooting.
Oswald Feliz, a city councilman and a friend of the Aracena family, explained, “He was very new to drill and said the wrong thing in a song.” It’s possible that because of that, he became a potential victim. Repeatedly, that’s the case in my district.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is just one lawmaker who has been outspoken in his criticism of drill music, arguing that it glorifies and encourages gang activity and gun violence among Black communities. Likening the content of drill videos to the controversial tweets of President Trump, Adams urged social media companies to remove them from their sites.
Some of Trump’s “spewing” led to him being banned from Twitter, as Adams stated earlier this year. Yet we continue to permit such content as music, gun displays, and graphic depictions of violence on these platforms.
Aracena’s family insists it was just a botched robbery, despite detectives’ reports that the shooting was related to the musician’s music.
“Yes, he was a rapper,” the teen’s cousin Odales Lenus said to the Daily News. But he was content and popular among his peers. No, it wasn’t his music; it was a theft.
Police are appealing to the general public for assistance in locating them.
Crime Stoppers of New York City can be reached at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-57-PISTA (Spanish) (74782). The CrimeStoppers website (crimestoppers.nypdonline.org) and the Twitter account (@NYPDTips) are two more ways to report information.
