Emily Baldwin On Wednesday, a firefighter on Chicago’s North Side passed away after suffering a critical injury while putting out a fire in a high-rise structure, according to authorities.
According to Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, Lt. Jan Tchoryk, 55, “went down” on the stairs on the building’s eleventh level.
On the 27th level of the condo and apartment building in the Gold Coast neighborhood, a fire was reported before 8 a.m. Tchoryk’s cause of death will be determined by a medical investigator.
Tchoryk is the second fireman from Chicago to pass away this week. While putting out a house fire on the city’s South Side on Tuesday, Jermaine Pelt, 49, passed away and two other firemen suffered injuries.
On Wednesday afternoon, outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot praised the city’s first rescuers as “heroic.”

According to officials, three additional firefighters were injured in the fire on Wednesday and were transported to hospitals where their conditions were listed as fair to severe.
