Who Is Simon Kwon? Former Skyline High star Simon Kwon wins the 125th Utah State Am
James Williams Simon Kwon, a former golfer for Skyline High and the University of California, seldom spends a day without reflecting on his defeat against BYU’s Zac Jones in the Utah State Amateur final match at Soldier Hollow Golf Club the previous year.
“I’ll be upfront: Every time I practice, I absolutely cannot help but think about the match from last year. It is something I still consider, Kwon said on Friday after winning two matches to secure a spot in the 36-hole championship for the second consecutive year.
“I noticed the winner’s photo from the previous year (Jones) ten minutes before my tee time today. It inspired me in a variety of ways to try and compete today so I can acquire a chance again.”
Before the 125th Utah State Amateur, Kwon’s opponent in the competition on Saturday rarely even considered winning one match, much less five so he could compete for the substantial silver award.
David Liechty, 18, is playing some of the best golf of his life right now, but soon after graduating from Layton High School, he will go on a service mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then play golf for Utah Tech in St. George.
Liechty admitted, “I didn’t think I’d make it this far. “… My realistic goal was to simply qualify for match play and then see what happens after that. I simply continued winning games. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.
Kwon is best known as Johnny Miller, a golfer in the Hall of Fame. Miller’s grandson had a simpler time reaching the finals on Friday than he did when he lost 4 and 4 to Jones in July. This could be significant because golfers were required to walk every hole on Friday and will likely be obliged to do the same on Saturday.
Who Is Simon Kwon?
Simon Kwon, a former Cal-Berkeley golfer who is currently in the NCAA transfer process and has two seasons left of eligibility, resides a few homes east of the No. 8 fairway and adjacent to the No. 8 green.
The 20-year-old Skyline High alum defeated recent Layton High alumnus David Liechty 6 and 5 in the 36-hole championship round on Saturday to avenge his loss to BYU golfer Zac Jones in the final match the previous year.
