American lawyer Katherine Chi Tai, born on March 18, 1974, has been the 19th United States Trade Representative since March 18, 2021.

She is the first Asian-American to hold the office, having been born to immigrants from Taiwan named Waishengren. She formerly worked for the US House Committee on Ways and Means as top trade counsel and is a member of the Democratic Party.

Tai was born in Connecticut on March 18, 1974. Tai was raised in Washington, D.C., and went to Sidwell Friends School there. Her parents, who are of Waishengren ancestry, were born in China, spent their formative years in Taiwan, and eventually emigrated to the US. Tai speaks Mandarin with ease.

Tai earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale University (Pierson College) in 1996.

Following her undergraduate studies, she spent two years (1996–1998) as a Yale–China Fellow teaching English at Sun Yat-sen University.

Tai continued her education at Harvard Law School, where she graduated in 2001 with a Juris Doctor.
