Carleton Bates Varney was an American decorator, designer, educator, and author who lived from January 23, 1937 to July 14, 2022.
Varney was born on January 23, 1937, in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he also spent his formative years.

In 1958, he received a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and the visual arts from Ohio’s Oberlin College, and in 1969, he received a master’s degree in fine arts instruction from New York University.

His design approach “emphasizes the use of vivid colors and the rejection of all that is impractical, inconvenient, and distracting,” according to his website.

West Virginia University’s Charleston campus bestowed an Honorary Doctorate on him in 1987. Mr. Color’s use of rich, vivid multicolors and patterns is the foundation of his painting, earning him the title.

Nicholas, a creator, has three sons.
