Melisandre is a crimson priestess of R’hllor and a shadow binder from the city of Asshai in Essos’s Further East. She has joined Stannis Baratheon’s, Lord of Dragonstone’s, court, thinking him to be Azor Ahai reborn, a hero destined to battle the Great Other.

Melisandre may see visions in flames and has entire faith in the might of her god, R’hllor. Although she recognizes that visions can be misinterpreted, she is confident in her capacity to interpret visions correctly, even if the vision does not totally accord with the recommended interpretation.

Why did Melisandre transform into an old woman?

Melisandre’s jewelry was actually magical, concealing her age and giving her the power of youth. Melisandre removed the necklace before going to bed in Season 6. Without the magical necklace, the gorgeous woman instantaneously transformed into her true shape as a weak elderly figure.

How did Melisandre die?

This was all but confirmed in Game of Thrones season 6, when Melisandre took off her necklace and showed her true form to be that of an old crone. That appearance returned after the Battle of Winterfell when her true purpose was fulfilled, a visibly aged Melisandre wandered out into the snow and allowed herself to die.
