Where is Lyle and Erik Menendez today?
James Austin Two young men, Lyle and Erik Menendez, caused a family to be ripped apart when they murdered their mother and father.
The Menendez brothers have been convicted of their parents’ homicides and have been serving time in prison. Currently, Lyle and Erik Menendez remain incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
After spending more than two decades in separate prisons, Lyle and Erik were reunited in April 2018. The last time they had seen each other was on September 10, 1996. The brothers hugged each other for a few minutes without saying any words to each other, observed by ABC News. Then, the prison officials allowed them to spend an hour together in a room.
Lyle was born on January 10, 1968, and Erik was born on November 27, 1970. At the time of Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed’s release date, Lyle is 55 years old, and Erik is 52. When they killed their mother and father, Lyle was 21, and Erik was 18.
On August 20, 1989, the two brothers used shotguns to carry out the murders of their parents Kitty and Jose Menendez at their Beverly Hills home. The brothers fatally shot Jose in the head and Kitty in the face and stomach.
On March 20, 1996, both Lyle and Erik were convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. On July 2, 1996, they were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Throughout the brothers’ trial, their legal team argued that they were sexually abused by their father, Jose Menendez. The Menendez brothers’ trial is relived in the docuseries Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed.
In the documentary, Lyle and Erik’s claims of sexual abuse are tied in with similar claims made against their father, according to former Menudo band member Roy Rosello. Rosello alleges that he was sexually assaulted by Jose while the patriarch was an executive at RCA Records.
On May 2, 2023, the docuseries Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed will be available to stream via Peacock.
The program provides an in-depth look into the Menendez brothers’ trial and their claims of sexual abuse. Prior to the docuseries, the case was featured in an episode of ABC’s 20/20 titled Inside the Menendez Movement Online.
