When he was just two years old in 2017, their son Henry was identified as having Rett Syndrome.

Henry was stopped from developing in the long run by the syndrome, a rare genetic disease for which there is no known therapy.

In a personal article he published in 2019, Engel described his joy at hearing his son speak “dada” for the first time at the age of three.

Henry passed away from Rett Syndrome on August 9, and his family is requesting donations for research to find a cure.
