Ghislaine Maxwell was born in 1961 the youngest out of the nine children of Elisabeth, a French-born scholar, and Robert Maxwell, a Czechoslovak-born British media proprietor.

Though, she was born the youngest out of nine children, at the time of her birth she was the youngest of eight living siblings. As she later grew up, she would become the youngest of seven living siblings.

Her older sister, Karine Maxwell died in 1957, at the age of three, from leukemia. Ghislaine was also born just two days before a car accident that left her older brother Michael in a prolonged coma.

Michael died six years later in 1967 without regaining consciousness at the age of 15. The accident had an effect on the entire family. Ghislaine had shown signs of anorexia while still a toddler.
