What did Cary Stayner do?

He was found guilty of killing Carole Sund, her teenage daughter Juli Sund, their teenage travelling companion Silvina Pelosso, and Yosemite Institute naturalist Joie Ruth Armstrong between February and July 1999.

In Mariposa County, California, close to Yosemite National Park, there were murders. Stayner remains on death row at San Quentin State Prison in California after receiving a death sentence for the four murders.

The bodies of Carole Sund and Pelosso, the first two victims, were discovered in the boot of the burned-out shell of Sund’s Pontiac rental car.

The remains were charred beyond recognition, but dental records allowed for their identification. A hand-drawn map revealing the whereabouts of Juli, Sund’s daughter, who was the third victim, was handed to the police along with a note. We had fun with this one, it said at the top of the note. The remains of Juli, whose throat had been slit, were discovered by investigators when they went to the spot indicated on the map.
