Captain Vijayakanth, the iconic Tamil actor and seasoned politician, has passed away at the age of 71 in Chennai. The news comes as he succumbed to complications arising from a positive Covid-19 diagnosis, necessitating ventilator support. Despite the dedicated efforts of the medical team, an official bulletin confirmed that the actor, admitted due to pneumonia, could not be saved.

Affectionately known as ‘Captain,’ Vijayakanth had been hospitalized in November for respiratory issues, subsequently being discharged a few weeks later. His final public appearance occurred on December 14, marking a poignant moment in his enduring legacy.

Throughout his illustrious career, Captain Vijayakanth exclusively worked in Tamil cinema, leaving an indelible mark with over 150 films to his credit. Renowned for his portrayal of police characters on screen, he earned the moniker ‘Captain’ following his 1991 film, Captain Prabhakaran. Within his political circle, he was often referred to as ‘Karuppu MGR.’

The actor-politician had a string of box office hits, including Chatriyan, Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Vallarasu, Ramana, Engal Anna, Senthoora Poove, Pulan Visaranai, Honest Raj, and Chinna Gounder. Beyond his cinematic achievements, Vijayakanth served as the president of Nadigar Sangam, a position he held after being elected unopposed until 2006.

Notably, it was during this time that he ventured into the political arena, founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party. His political foray proved impactful, with the party emerging as a formidable force in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. In 2011, Vijayakanth assumed the role of the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
