Until Dawn Studio Supermassive Currently Has No Plans For Sequel
Samuel Coleman PS VR title Rush of Blood notwithstanding, developer Supermassive Games currently has no plans for a direct sequel to 2015 sleeper hit Until Dawn.
When quizzed about the possibility of a continuation in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Supermassive’s Managing Director Pete Samuels conceded that there’s “a lot of speculation about what we’re doing and what we’re working on right now,” though he did confirm that the developer “[is] not working on Until Dawn 2 at the moment. We’re working on other things.”
Interestingly, Supermassive’s publishing deal with Sony has now ended, meaning the studio’s future titles could go multi-platform. And though Samuels remained coy about the exact nature of those “other things,” it seems safe to assume that the developer will remain in the realm of cinematic, narrative-driven games.
Besides, after flexing its chops with the Killzone: Shadow Fall engine while creating Until Dawn, Samuels notes that the logical next step for Supermassive is to expand “into similar experiences.”
“We really want to push to bring those experiences, those cinematic storytelling narrative-driven games, be it horror or not, to other platforms as well. It seems that the next logical step for us now is to broaden that out into similar experiences, but with differences depending on the IP, the publisher, the platform, so on. That’s what we want, and that’s what we’re really focused on now…to take what we did with Until Dawn and push that even further.”
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is expected to launch in and around the same timeframe as PlayStation VR on October 13, 2016.
