Ryder, his son, announced his father’s death on Facebook:
“My Dad passed away this afternoon.” “I appreciate the support from the community. I’m glad I got to see him again before he passed away. Don’t wait to embrace the people you care about; you can never tell how much time you have left. Tim’s last words, he said later, were “I love you… share the music.”
Bachman reflected on BTO’s breakup in 1990, right before the band signed a record deal. “We put everything that we had into it,” he stated of their just finished debut album, produced under the name Brave Belt.
We did it ourselves, went far into debt, and made it… After the eighty-sixth rejection, we finally said, “Well, that’s it.” We had just finished taping “Midnight Special,” Canada’s answer to “Late Night,” and were relaxing in a hotel room in Toronto. I mean, what else are we supposed to do? You can only bang your head against a wall so many times. I guess I’ll have to sell shoes or something to make ends meet, or maybe I’ll just switch bands and try again. Randy’s phone rang 10 minutes after we’d split up, and it was Mercury Records.
The band huddled around the phone when the label executive said he’d just heard the first two verses of the opening single, “Gimme Your Money Please.” When questioned if the rest of the CD was as wonderful as the song, he claimed they responded, “It’s better!” According to his explanation, “They responded, ‘Okay, great – if it’s as nice as this you have a deal.’… The only issue is that your name stinks, they said.
Tim Bachman, a founding member of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, has passed away at the age of 71.
