Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as Weeknd, was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 16, 1990. Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, Ethiopian immigrants, divorced shortly after he was born.

He was raised in Scarborough by his mother and grandmother. The Weeknd was raised as an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. When asked about his religious beliefs in 2020, he told Variety, “I dunno…everything is a test, and if you are religious or spiritual, you have to go through things.”

A few of them include; The Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2022 with the song hurricane, the Billboard Music Award for Top Artist in 2021, the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year in 2020 with the song Binding Lights in 2020, and the Juno Award for Single of the Year in 2016 and 2021.

In the year 2021, he was nominated for Artist of the Year, Favorite Male Pop Artist, Favorite Music Video, Favorite Pop Song, and Favorite Latin Song.
