In Loving Memory of Sherman Vannoy – Lake Minneola High School Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Senior Student

The Lake Minneola High School community is in mourning following the tragic loss of one of its own. Sherman Vannoy, a 17-year-old senior, met with a devastating accident on Monday morning that claimed his life. He was struck by a school bus while riding his bicycle at the school’s entrance, leaving a profound sense of sorrow and grief among students, faculty, and the broader community.

The Tragic Accident
The heart-wrenching incident occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Hancock Road and Fox Trail Avenue. Sherman Vannoy was struck by a school bus driven by a 78-year-old Leesburg woman. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Vannoy was riding his bicycle on a sidewalk when he entered a marked crosswalk. Simultaneously, the school bus was making a turn to enter Lake Minneola High School. Tragically, the front of the bus collided with Vannoy, propelling it off the road, where it struck a stop sign and a fence.

Sherman Vannoy was rushed to South Lake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, marking a devastating loss to the Lake Minneola High School community. The bus driver, who had been hired in November 2021, was unharmed and remained at the scene, but deeply distressed by the accident, as stated by Sherri Owens, communications coordinator with Lake County Schools. Lake County Schools issued a statement expressing the profound sadness felt by the school district: “One of our school buses was involved in a tragic, fatal accident at the entrance of Lake Minneola High School. We are in touch with the (teen victim’s) family and are offering our support.” In the wake of this tragedy, grief counselors will be available at Lake Minneola High School throughout the week to provide assistance to students and faculty members grappling with the loss.

In a gesture of remembrance and respect, Lake Minneola High School plans to honor Sherman Vannoy during its Monday night football game at East Ridge, despite him not being a member of the football team. Additionally, all on-campus sporting practices and a scheduled volleyball game at Lake Minneola High on Monday night have been canceled.
