Ben Roethlisberger, the 18-year veteran quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers and likely future Hall of Famer, announced his retirement earlier this offseason. Roethlisberger had some comments as the club prepares for its first campaign without him since the early 2000s.

We previously covered his claim that the Rooney family was fine with his continuing to play but former Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert wanted Ben Roethlisberger to retire sooner. In the same article where he discussed Colbert, Roethlisberger also discussed how his career as a whole turned out.

When asked about his career regrets by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (h/t ProFootballTalk), Roethlisberger initially brought up the team’s Super Bowl XLV defeat to the Green Bay Packers.

He seemed to attribute the team’s lack of postseason success in recent years, compared to early in his career, to the team’s treatment of younger players.

In any case, it would not be reasonable to anticipate that the Steelers’ relative lack of success would be due to the claim that today’s players are pampered whereas Roethlisberger was not.

After all, in order to win Super Bowls XLIV through LVI, teams like the Saints, Packers, Giants, Ravens, Seahawks, Patriots, Broncos, Eagles, Chiefs, Buccaneers, and Rams likely employed younger players than Roethlisberger.
