Richard Jay Belzer, an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, is best known for his role as Detective John Munch on the NBC television series “Homicide: Life on the Street, which aired for seven seasons, was followed by “Homicide: The Movie’.

He also made an appearance on the crime drama series “Law & Order: Unit for Special Victims Special Victims Unit, which ran for an additional fifteen seasons on television.
