Retired javelin Juha Laukkanen injured a judge 1994 Bislett Games
James Austin A remarkable athletic accomplishments can be overshadowed by unanticipated events.
At the Bislett Games in Oslo in 1994, retired Finnish javelin thrower Juha Lauri Laukkanen became famous for the wrong reasons—an unforgettable moment. An ordinary throw took a dramatic and shocking turn, injuring a judge and cementing Laukkanen’s place in sports lore.
Juha Laukkanen set a new record of 88.22 meters in June 1992 at Kuortane, Finland. He was born on January 6, 1969, in Pielavesi, Finland. Laukkanen had a successful career on the field, but he became infamous for injuring officials with his throws on two separate occasions, the most infamous of which occurred at the Bislett Games.
An important stop on the sports calendar, the Bislett Games draw world-class competitors to Oslo, Norway’s famed Bislett Stadium.
But the javelin competition at the 1994 edition will go down in history as the one where everything went wrong.
The crowd and his fellow competitors were eagerly awaiting Laukkanen’s javelin throw since they knew it would showcase his technique and strength. They had no idea that this throw would completely break the rules in a way no one had ever seen before.
Despite the importance of accuracy and control in this sport, Laukkanen’s throw went in the opposite direction of the intended target—the judging area. The unthinkable occurred when a judge was severely injured to his arm after being impaled by a javelin.
As the gravity of the situation became clear, the Bislett Stadium went silent as rescue workers raced to the aid of the wounded official
