The ubiquitous Peter Stormare has just joined the growing cast of Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. According to a Deadline report, the entertaining and versatile Swedish actor will play a corrupt town sheriff named Berringer.

Stromare is everywhere, and sometimes where you least expect him. Coming up, he has a small role in The Divide, an indie horror film that will premiere at the SXSW film festival in Austin next month. Most recently he’s finishing up with the filming of the Luc Besson-produced Lock Out. No matter how small the role, Stormare always owns it. He has a subtle humor about him, which makes his villains sadistic but almost likeable. I look forward to seeing his take on this fairy tale baddie.

This fairy-tale reboot is written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, a Norwegian writer/director/actor who isn’t well known to U.S. audiences as most of his work has been, understandably, in Norway. That being said, he did garner some buzz with his indie zombie/Nazi horror Dead Snow. Hansel and Gretel has already picked up some big names as far as casting goes, with Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) and Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) set to play the leads. The story follows the two children of the original fairytale all grown up and transformed into bad-ass witch hunters. Famke Janssen (X-Men) will play the evil witch.

A tentative release date for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters has been set for March of 2012.
