He is a decorated player at the international level, having been a member of the gold-medal-winning Canadian team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. A native of Toronto, Subban, along with his brothers, played for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the junior years. Although he grew up in Toronto, he was a supporter of the Montreal Canadiens, and not of the hometown team, Toronto Maple Leafs. During the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, he was picked by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round, 43rd overall. He received the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenceman in 2013 and scored the most number of goals among defenceman along with Kris Letang. His performance convinced the Montreal Canadiens to offer him an eight-year, $72-million contract, which he accepted. In 2016, the Montreal Canadiens traded him to the Nashville Predators in a blockbuster move for defenceman Shea Weber. Three seasons later, in 2019, he was traded to the Devils for Steven Santini.
