Obituary | Silver Saunders Friedman Passes Away : Cofounder of Famed NY Comedy Club the Improv
Mia Fernandez The New York Improv was managed by Silver Saunders Friedman until its closure in 1992. He passed away.
There were no immediate details on the cause. Her demise occurs less than a month after Budd Friedman, her ex-husband, who cofounded the New York club and eventually oversaw the L.A. Improv, passed away.
The New York Improv was first established in 1963 as a late-night coffee shop by Budd Friedman and Silver Saunders, who would later become his wife. It was situated on West 44th, close to 9th Avenue, in the Hell’s Kitchen district. Saunders, who was performing in the Broadway production of “How to Succeed in Business,” complained to her boyfriend that there was nowhere in the Theater District for the younger and less-paid cast members to eat and unwind.
The Improv was formed to satisfy that demand, also offering an open mic where singers and comedians could do impromptu performances and try out new material.
Saunders and Friedman got married, and the place developed into the city’s first club where comedy was the primary event and not just a warm-up or supporting act.
1974 saw the opening of a second site at 8162 Melrose Avenue. Budd Friedman received ownership of the LA Improvs as part of the divorce settlement from the Friedmans in 1981, while Silver Friedman received ownership of the New York Improv. In 1992, the first New York Improv theater closed.
There was a piano and an exposed-brick wall in the Improv’s main room. Saunders Friedman invited guests to visit and perform.
