Mia Fernandez After a year-long struggle with stomach cancer, Greg Dale Duke, PhD, who served as the Director of Sport Psychology and the Leadership Program for Duke Athletics, passed away on Thursday, November 24 at the age of 60.

Cammie, Dale’s wife of 28 years, and their four children, Abbey, Graham, Charles, and Lucas are still alive.
Dale spent more than two decades working as a member of the Duke Athletics team and is one of the top authorities in the country on sports leadership and psychology. In his special position, he delivered instruction through various educational programs to the department’s athletes, coaches, and administrators as well as to a number of professional sports franchises and coaches. In addition, Dale offered team building services to the department’s sporting teams and other divisions.
Dale, a well-known professor of sport psychology and sport ethics at the Department of Health, Wellness, and Physical Education, has received numerous awards from Duke University for his outstanding instruction.
Dale was appointed to Duke’s newly established Integrative Performance Excellence Group in July 2018. This group consists of directors for athletic medicine, sports nutrition, behavioral health, and sports performance, as well as representatives for psychological services, team physicians, and primary care physicians. As part of its comprehensive approach to student-athlete health, this working group sought to improve the experience of Duke student-athletes by offering an integrative approach to each athlete’s care throughout his or her collegiate career and continuing to cultivate partnerships with the Duke University Hospital, Duke Sports Science Institute, Duke Student Health, and Duke Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
In 1985, Dale graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a bachelor’s degree. Later, in 1987 and 1993, he received his master’s degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from the University of Tennessee.
Before moving to Duke in 2000, he started his career as a sport psychology professor at Winthrop University.
Dale, a native of Troy, Texas, wrote several books on leadership, coaching, parenting, and performance. He also provided consulting services to a wide range of international sports and business groups.
The family gratefully accepts donations in Greg’s honor to the Greg Dale Leadership Academy, which aids student-athletes at Duke University, in place of flowers. The planning is being handled by Hall-Wynne Funeral Service & Crematory.
