After university, Shapiro got a job at ABC News immediately, in 1980. During his 13 year career at ABC, Shapiro produced news for PrimeTimeLive and Nightline. When he left in 1993, he got a job at NBC News and was made executive producer of Dateline NBC in the same year. He then made the show from one night a week to five nights a week at primetime.

Due to the expansion of the show, they began producing over 800 new stories per year. Shapiro stated that the news magazines of each of the major American networks had each pushed the genre, and helped Dateline become a nightly primetime program. He was then appointed president of NBC News in June 2001.

During his reign, he oversaw the transition of news anchors on NBC Nightly News between Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams. He created NBC News Productions, which produces programming for several channels like; Court TV, Bravo, Discovery, Lifetime, and History. He had a remarkably successful career at NBC which made him bag several awards including;  32 Emmys, 31 Edward R. Murrow Awards, and 3 Columbia DuPont awards.

Shapiro was then named CEO of WNET in January 2008. He has made great changes in the station including introducing a Sunday program, Sunday Arts, which features great museum exhibits, films, galleries, and performances going on in New York City.
