The duo's first single titled "The First Single" from one of their EPs became a hit on Phoenix radio station KEDJ which ultimately garnered the duo a deal with Elektra Records in 2002. The following year, they released their first studio album titled ‘Interventions + Lullabies’.The Format released their second EP titled ‘Snails’ with Atlantic Records in 2005. Ruess and his music partner then began working on their second album ‘Dog Problems’ which was released by their own newly established label, The Vanity Label, later on.Following The Format's breakup in 2008, Ruess collaborated with Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff to form the band Fun.
