Missing Matthew McCallan Update;Hundreds of Volunteers Join Search For Him
Robert Clark Hundreds of volunteers have taken part in a search for missing teenager Matthew McCallan who was last seen in the Fintona area in the early hours of Sunday.
Police have said Matthew was seen at around 1.30am in the Co Tyrone village and released a photograph of the 15-year-old which is believed to have been taken shortly before he disappeared.
Large volunteer groups, including Matthew’s family members have been carrying out searches in the area which are set to continue on Monday morning.
Fintona Pearses GAA Club appealed on social media for anyone wishing to join the search for Matthew to meet at 9am at the Church of Ireland on Ecclesville Road.
“We are hoping that the search effort can be coordinated from there insofar as we can. We want to make sure we keep a good record of where has been searched and where hasn’t so that we make sure all areas are covered,” a post said.
“Obviously anything we do is in support of the statutory agencies and we need to be careful not to cut across their work. They are clearly in the lead and this is a voluntary community effort. In the instance you are searching an area and you come across PSNI or search and rescue we would ask that you leave them to it and search another area.”
Sinn Fein MLA Nicola Brogan said “Volunteers are still searching for young Matthew McCallan around the Fintona area…Groups are searching sheds/outhouses/derelict buildings where Matthew may have sought shelter. I hope Matthew is found safe.”
A police spokesperson said on Sunday: “Police in Omagh and Dungannon are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of missing 15 year old Matthew McCallan.
“Matthew was last seen at around 1.30am this morning in the Fintona area.”
Anyone with information should contact detectives on 101 quoting reference number 319 4/12/22.
