Emily Baldwin MIKABEN Death, Micheal Benjamin Haiti Died Of Cardiac Arrest At Accor Arena, Paris
Micah Benjamin, also known as Mikaben, passed away on Saturday after collapsing on stage in Paris with the Haitian konpa band Carimi.
He was 41.
Wyclef Jean, a Grammy-winning hip hop singer originally from Haiti, said of the news, “This is a shock.”
This is a developing story. We’ll update it as confirmed information comes to light.
Reports that Michael “Mikaben” Benjamin, a member of the popular Haitian band Carimi, collapsed onstage after their 15th anniversary reunion performance in Paris on October 15 have sent shockwaves through the Haitian community around the world.
Benjamin, also known as “Mika,” was 41 years old. His father, Lionel “Père Nol” Benjamin, was also a singer and was known as the “Haitian Santa Claus” for his song Abdenwèl, which was a huge hit during the holiday season.
Reports indicate the younger Benjamin died of cardiac arrest, but this has not been confirmed.
Alex Abellard, leader of Zin, a Brooklyn band that helped form the New Generation Konpa in the ’80s, has said, “He was a musical genius and that’s what we just lost.”
Abellard praised his “extremely distinctive” writing style. In a country that already lacks so much, try to picture life without it. A lot of our global culture will be lost if that happens.
Following his meteoric rise to popularity in the early 2000s with smash successes like “Ou Pati” and popular collaborations with fellow Haitian Music Industry (HMI) singers like Carimi, Alan Cave, and DJ Michael Brun, Benjamin went on to have a successful musical career that spanned more than 20 years. After the popular band Konpa Kreyol broke into two groups, Kreyol La and Krezi Mizik, Benjamin was recruited as the lead singer of the latter and his many talents were on full display.
Krezi was an absolute powerhouse in the Haitian music scene thanks to Benjamin’s dynamic vocal range. He sang catchy tunes and held the attention of a carnival crowd, causing them to sway from right to left while waving their bandanas in a state of near insanity.
Abellard recalled seeing Zin perform with Benjamin on tour in Martinique and Guadeloupe. His charisma attracted a lot of admirers, and he always made an effort to engage with his following.
That really breaks my heart. Abellard, his voice cracking, expressed his distress late on Saturday. One of our most versatile performers was Mikaben. He was well-versed in a wide variety of musical styles. He wasn’t a prisoner of Haitian tradition. Whatever hue he found, he would disperse globally. He was truly exceptional. In his passing, we lost a brilliant musician and producer. He was able to get along with everyone he came across.
The son of Lionel Benjamin, also known as the “Haitian Santa Claus” for his hit Christmas song Abdenwèl, Benjamin is also known as “Benjamin.” The older Benjamin revealed to The Haitian Times last year that Michael’s love of music began at an early age and that he took great delight in observing his practice sessions.

Benjamin’s final tweet was a French message to the band Carimi, in which he called them “elder brothers,” wished them well in their Paris performance, and expressed gratitude to the group for paving the way for musicians like himself.
