George Israel Tribe and Paulina Tribe are the celebrity parents of Laurence Henry Tribe an American legal scholar who is a University Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. He previously served as the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard Law School. A constitutional law scholar, Tribe is co-founder of the American Constitution Society.

George Israel Tribe and Paulina Tribe are the parents of Tribe. Both of his parents are Jewish. His father was from Poland and his mother was born in Harbin to immigrants from Eastern Europe. Tribe spent his early years in the French Concession of Shanghai before his family immigrated to the United States when he was six years old. His family settled in San Francisco

Tribe parents sailed from Shanghai on an Army transport ship, General W.H. Gordon, and landed in San Francisco where they rented an apartment on Clay Street, in downtown San Francisco. Then later moved to the Sunset District, which was not far from the beach.

They mostly lived in a two-bedroom rented apartment. But later on, George Israel had a couple of good years and was able to buy a small house. He was a car salesman, then in China, and sold Fords. In San Francisco, he sold Chevrolets, and then he “graduated” to selling Cadillacs.

Paulina Tribe was educated better than her husband George, but none of them went to college. Paulina was admitted to a medical school in Milan, and she desperately wanted to go to medical school, during the late 1930s without having more than a high school education which was allowed. But her husband and father conspired to prevent that. She was an interesting woman. She loved Russian literature, although she was not particularly educated, and later became a dental assistant.
