Lester Piggott is all over the headlines this time around not for pleasant reasons but due to his untimely passing. This has led to a flood of tributes from his fans and well-wishers alike all over the globe.

According to his family, Piggott died on Sunday after being admitted to a hospital in Switzerland last week. He is apparently the former champion British jockey who won the Epsom Derby nine times and was widely regarded as one of the greatest riders of all time, died at the age of 86.

He retired from racing at the age of 59 and he is said to be the Queen’s all-time favorite jockey.  His last victory in the UK came in the November Handicap nearly three decades, but he won the Black Opal Stakes on Zadok in Canberra in March 1995 as part of a series of overseas rides that ended his career.
