The Federal Aviation Administration said on Saturday that a worker  Kendall Lock was fatally hurt while on the ramp at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama, where an American Airlines regional carrier flight was parked.

The event that happened while American Airlines Flight 3408, an Embraer E175, was parked at the gate after arriving from Dallas will be looked into by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. The airport was closed following the incident, according to the FAA.

According to those briefed on the situation, the employee was reportedly killed in an accident involving a functioning engine of the aircraft.

Envoy Air, an entirely owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group, ran the trip.

The airport made the unspecific claim that a ground crew member for Piedmont Airlines, another minor airline operated by American, was slain.

In a statement, American said it was heartbroken by the accident, which it confirmed involved a Piedmont employee.

The airline declined to comment further on the ongoing inquiry, saying only that “we are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time.”
