At a bail hearing on Wednesday, a judge ordered the man who fatally shot 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis while she was in a car that had accidentally turned into his driveway to remain in jail.

Gillis was one of several passengers in a car that, Saturday, as the party was seeking for a friend’s house in a remote part of upstate New York, unintentionally went into the wrong driveway. According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan opened fire from his front porch as the pals realized their error and started to leave.

There was no interaction between Monahan and anybody in the car before bullets were fired, and it is believed that no one got out of the car.

An accusation of second-degree murder against Monahan relates to the passing of Gillis. He was bound at the feet and around the waist when he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, wearing a dark suit.

In their request that Monahan be sent to police custody without bail, the prosecution said that the defendant’s aggressive and compulsive personality should be taken into account.

At the bail hearing, Monahan’s lawyer, Kurt Mausert, argued that his client should have been granted pretrial release because he had lived in the area for more than 30 years and had never been detained or found guilty in the state of New York.

He hasn’t been found guilty under the law, Mausert added. He has strong ties to the neighborhood, and both he and his wife have deep roots here.
