Teen taken off life support after police officer in Gulfport shot him in the head.
Jaheim McMillan, 15, has been removed from life support after being shot by a Gulfport police officer and being transported to the hospital.Following an altercation that happened on Thursday, McMillan was shot. The Gulfport Police Department issued a news release stating that it had received reports of a car containing many individuals, all of whom were under the age of 18, pointing firearms at passing vehicles. All but two of the passengers exited the car after it was stopped by an officer outside of a Family Dollar on the corner of 8th Avenue and Pass Road.According to the news statement, shots were fired as a result of the police engaging an armed suspect named McMillan. A foot pursuit ended with the capture of the second suspect. Following treatment for a gunshot wound at Gulfport Memorial Hospital, McMillan was sent to USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. A number of guns were found and several individuals were apprehended.On Thursday night, Katrina Mateen, the mother of the victim, spoke with our sister station WVUE in New Orleans.He had his hands up when he exited the dollar store, and Mateen said that he was shot in the head. “And after that, I hear that he saw them… He was in the car when he saw the cops pull up with firearms. He got out of the car and tried to go into the store when he was shot in the head. The man in the video that I saw on Facebook basically claims that my son did nothing. Why did you guys shoot him when he had his hands up?”WLOX has not yet verified those specifics. She said that the family had already faced with an officer-involved shooting because Jaheim’s uncle had died in a police standoff in 2018.
