Topeka, Kansas, witnessed its 31st homicide of 2023 on a fateful Sunday, breaking the city’s annual record of 30, previously set in 2017. The victim, Jackson E. Danner, aged 23 and a Topeka resident, lost his life to gun violence in the area near Washburn University. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The tragic discovery occurred when police responded to a call shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, directing them to the 1600 block of S.W. 21st. Danner was found in a front yard in this location, as reported by Rosie Nichols, a public safety communications specialist for the city of Topeka. It’s important to note that all residences in this particular block are situated on the south side of the street.
Despite immediate response and intervention, Jackson E. Danner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident marked the fifth gun-related homicide in Topeka within a mere six days. Authorities have not disclosed any potential connections between these cases.

The other victims in these recent tragedies include Lawrencia Perez-Belair, a 4-year-old fatally shot in the 400 block of N.E. Grattan Avenue on Saturday; Damayah R. Calhoun, aged 17, fatally shot in the early hours of Friday in the 600 block of S.E. Lawrence; Ra’Juan Spicer, aged 18, fatally shot in the early evening on Wednesday in the 1200 block of S.W. Clay; and Victor Carlton, aged 17, fatally shot late on Tuesday in the 2000 block of S.E. Pennsylvania Avenue. It’s noteworthy that while an arrest has been made in Lawrencia’s case, it is unrelated to the shootings resulting in the tragic loss of Danner, Calhoun, Carlton, and Spicer.
