Tiffany Renee Darwish was born in the Los Angeles suburb of Norwalk, California, on October 2, 1971, to Janie Wilson and James Robert Darwish, who divorced when she was 14 months old. Tiffany’s father is Lebanese, and her mother is Irish with Native American ancestors.

Tiffany began singing at age four when she learned the words to the Tanya Tucker song “Delta Dawn”. She lived with her father after her parents divorced and attended Norwalk High School during her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Norwalk’s Leffingwell Christian High School.

Tiffany made her debut with country music singer Jack Reeves in 1981 at Narods, a country and western venue in Chino, California. She then passed a hat among the audience and collected $235 in her first career earnings.

Tiffany signed a recording contract with George Tobin in 1984 after hearing her sing on a demo tape. She competed on Star Search with Ed McMahon in 1985, finishing second overall. She signed a contract giving Tobin complete control over her career in 1986, recorded her debut studio album, and was signed to an MCA contract.

Tiffany was released in 1987, but the first single from the album, “Danny,” failed to chart. Following the failure of “Danny,” Tobin sent Tiffany on The Beautiful You: Celebrating the Good Life Shopping Mall Tour ’87, a nationwide tour of shopping malls. The tour began in Paramus, New Jersey, at the Bergen Mall.

Her second single, “I Think We’re Alone Now,” a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’ hit, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is still her biggest hit.
