Daniel Johnson Victor Niederhoffer (born December 10, 1943) is a hedge fund manager, squash champion, bestselling book, and statistician who has worked in the financial industry for almost three decades. Victor Niederhoffer was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of Jews. His father, Arthur, graduated from Brooklyn Law School but chose to work for the New York City Police Department thereafter. Elaine, Victor’s mother, worked as a teacher. Niederhoffer received his bachelor’s degree in statistics and economics from Harvard University in 1964 and his master’s degree in statistics and economics from the University of Chicago in 1965. (Ph.D. 1969). During the years 1967–1972, he worked as a finance professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Niederhoffer, Cross, and Zeckhauser, Inc. was established in 1965 by him and Frank Cross while they were still in college. The business was an investment bank that specialised in the sale of privately owned enterprises to publicly traded corporations. This company is currently known as Niederhoffer Henkel, and it is headed by Lee Henkel, a former general counsel for the Internal Revenue Service.
