Tsitsipas was born to Apostolos Tsitsipas and Julia Apostoli in Athens. His father is Greek and he was born in Proastio, Karditsa. His mother who is Russian was born to Sergei Salnikov, a Soviet footballer.

His parents met at a WTA tournament in Athens where his mother was competing and his father was a line judge. At the time of his birth, both his parents had been working as tennis instructors at the Astir Palace resort hotel in Vouliagmeni.

He is the oldest of their four children and has three younger siblings; two brothers Petros and Pavlos, and a sister Elisavet.

His brother Petros represents Greece at the Davis Cup and has a career-high ATP doubles ranking of No. 177 and singles ranking of No. 727.
