Olivia House The Oakland Athletics confirmed Sunday morning that Vida Blue, a three-time World Series champion and the American League MVP in 1971, had passed away. He was 73.
Saturday night saw Blue’s death. The reason of death was not disclosed.
Vida Blue has had a career like few others, according to a statement from the Athletics. He was a Cy Young Award winner, MVP, six-time All-Star, three-time champion, and member of the Oakland A’s Hall of Fame.
“Vida will always remain a friend and a legend of the franchise. We offer his family and friends our sincere condolences during this difficult time.
Blue played with the Athletics for nine of his 17 seasons. He also played for the Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants at various points.
Blue went on to make 502 appearances and compile a 209-161 record with a 3.27 ERA. He won the MVP and Cy Young Awards in 1971 after posting a record of 24-8 and a 1.82 ERA. The three-time World Series champion Athletics won three straight championships between 1972 and 1974 with significant assistance from the six-time All-Star.
