James Litton, an American musician who conducted the American Boychoir from 1985 to 2001 and is regarded as one of the top choral conductors of his generation, died on November 1, 2022.
Dr. Litton routinely led workshops and seminars both domestically and abroad while conducting choral and orchestral pieces on all five continents. He has conducted the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Berkshire Choral Festival, and music festivals in Canada, Prague, Guatemala, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, France, Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and South Africa during previous seasons.In West Virginia, Connecticut, Indiana, New York, and New Jersey, Dr. Litton founded a number of choral ensembles, including community choruses, college, church, and school choirs. More than 40 albums include his conducting of choirs, chamber ensembles, and orchestras, including numerous CDs featuring the American Boychoir on labels like Angel Records, Philips Records, Sony Music Entertainment Inc., Virgin Records, Bertelsmann Music Group, Linn Records, and Music Masters. His most recent recordings are “Sound from Heaven” with soprano Anna Maria Friman and the Girl Choristers of the cathedral, as well as “Sing in Exultation,” a CD of music for the Advent and Christmas seasons, with the Choirs of Washington National Cathedral.With the news of James Litton’s death buzzing all over social media, one could only think of what would take the life of such a person suddenly.
