The actress was accused of being anti-black, and she is now speaking out. It looks like Gina Rodriguez was deeply hurt by such claims since she broke down crying while defending herself against the racism accusations.

The Jane the Virgin star was a guest on radio show Sway in the Morning not too long ago, and while there, she got emotional while addressing the claims that she is anti-black.

The rumor started back in November when Rodriguez stated, during a Net-a-Porter roundtable, that Black women are usually paid more than Latinx ones.

The backlash got even bigger when she tweeted: ‘Marvel and DC are killing it in inclusion and women but where are the Latinos?! Asking for a friend…’

A lot of people thought that she was slamming Black Panther’s groundbreaking representation of Black people.

Some even pointed out that Afro-Latinx actresses such as Tessa Thompson and Zoe Saldana are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During the roundtable, she explained that ‘what I was saying was that when we talk about equal pay, we have to talk about intersectionality because we all must rise.’

She then went on to break down in tears as she called the backlash ‘devastating.’

Gina explained that it was ‘a really dark time,’ mainly because of her connection to the Black community.

‘The Black community was the only community that I looked towards growing up. We didn’t have many Latino shows, and the Black community made me feel like I was seen. So to get anti-black is saying that I’m anti-family. My father is dark-skinned, he’s Afro-Latino, and my cousins are, and Puerto Ricans are African, Taino, and Spaniard, and it’s in blood, so that was really devastating to me.’

She added that ‘the last thing I want to do is put two underrepresented groups against each other. Our unification is what is our rise. Our unification is what’s going to allow both our communities to continue to flourish.’
