Gina Bryant had recently left an abusive relationship with Wendling, which culminated in her moving out of their shared apartment in Grand Blanc Township, with the support of her family. Bryant had disclosed that she had been suffering from months of abuse at the hands of Wendling. It is disheartening to note that their relationship, which had begun in August 2022, lasted for just 11 months before this tragic incident.  On October 12, 2023, Bryant went home for lunch. However, she failed to return to work after her lunch break, causing concern among her coworkers. They began receiving strange text messages from her phone. Subsequently, her employer, where she worked as a medical assistant, reported her as a missing person.

The next day, on October 13, LaSalle police were dispatched to the Flying J Travel Stop along Interstate 80 and Civic Road. Tragically, Gina Bryant’s lifeless body was found next to the fuel pumps, having been left there for hours. She had been fatally shot in the head.

A Promising Future Cut Short: At the time of her death, Gina Bryant was studying to become a nurse, with a bright future ahead of her. Her tragic loss has left a profound impact on her community.

The Assailant’s Confession: On October 13, Wendling reportedly called his parents and informed them that he had taken Bryant to Illinois and killed her. He provided information about their location in LaSalle. Wendling also stated that he had taken Bryant’s life and was planning to take his own.

Wendling’s Tragic End: In a heartbreaking turn of events, Wendling was discovered by police in Bettendorf, Iowa, in the hours following the confession. As law enforcement approached his vehicle, a shot rang out, and Justin Wendling took his own life. The police have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding his death.
